Malawi signs China‑backed deal to add four new Lake vessels
The Malawian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese contractor Xiao Xiang Investment to expand the fleet serving Lake Malawi. The agreement calls for the construction of two dry cargo vessels, one fuel tanker and one passenger vessel, as well as a new port facility at Chipoka in Salima.
Principal Secretary Bright Kumwenda said the new ships will allow the ageing flagship MV Ilala to be taken out of service for major repairs without disrupting lakeshore communities, cut logistics costs and ease pressure on the M1 highway. Managing Director Chen Cheng added that the vessels will improve the efficiency of oil and freight transport, open direct corridors to ports in Tanzania and Mozambique, and support an integrated transport system through logistics parks, skills training and community projects.
