Malawi Speaker faces party backlash over parliamentary investigations

A constitutional standoff has emerged in Malawi between Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The conflict centers on Suleman’s decision to establish 12 joint parliamentary committees to conduct investigations into matters of serious public concern and state failures.

While the DPP leadership, including Secretary General Peter Mukhito, has criticized the move as a usurpation of executive power and reminded Suleman of his political obligations to the party, supporters argue the Speaker is fulfilling his constitutional mandate. Governance advocate James Kadyampakeni has applauded Suleman’s courage, stating that the Speaker’s responsibility to the Constitution and the Malawian people must supersede party politics.

Analysts suggest the legislative push for oversight is a response to a perceived governance vacuum within the executive branch, noting the diminished public presence of President Peter Mutharika. The dispute highlights a fundamental tension regarding the separation of powers and the legislature's duty to maintain accountability when the executive is seen as failing to perform its duties.
