Malawi Speaker Suleman pledges intensified oversight of public spending

Sameer Suleman, Speaker of the Parliament of Malawi, has called for increased legislative capacity and more rigorous oversight of public expenditure. Speaking at the opening of the second cohort of the Parliamentary Training Programme (PTP) at the Malawi School of Government in Lilongwe, Suleman emphasized that strengthening oversight is a central priority of his tenure.

Suleman urged Members of Parliament to enhance their skills in law-making, representation, and scrutiny to ensure government policies and public funds are managed effectively. He stated that Parliament should adopt an investigative approach to tracking resources, suggesting that committees should be active on the ground to verify that budgets reach their intended purposes.

The training programme is described as a strategic investment intended to improve the quality of parliamentary debate and decision-making for the 2025–2030 parliamentary term.
