Malawi Speaker Suleman rebuked by religious groups over political remarks

Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleman has faced criticism from religious and governance groups following remarks made during a religious event in Lilongwe. Suleman alleged that Muslims are being sidelined in government Cabinet appointments despite making up a significant portion of the population. He also claimed that public funds intended for fertilizer for the poor are being stolen and that those who speak out against such corruption face removal from their positions.

The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) issued a statement distancing itself from Suleman’s comments, urging political leaders to keep religion out of partisan politics and respect the independence of religious institutions. MAM spokesperson Sheikh Dinala Chabulika noted that Muslims already hold senior positions, such as the Attorney General and the Speaker himself, though he requested continued consideration for various public roles.

The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) also joined the backlash, with spokespeople warning that such remarks risk setting a dangerous precedent regarding religious representation in governance.
