Malawi unrest: land compensation dispute and MP's criticism of presidential circle

Residents of Kasasire in Malawi's Nkhatabay district have been displaced from their ancestral land after a relocation to temporary shelters at a CCAP church in Livingstonia. A court in Mzuzu ruled in favour of the community, which now demands K150 billion in compensation and has attempted to march to Lilongwe to present their case to President Arthur Peter Mutharika. Activists warn that women, children and the elderly risk death on the road and have called for government intervention.

In a separate political development, Malawian MP Steve Baba Malondera blamed former President Lazarus Chakwera’s inner circle—comprising family members and allies from the Assemblies of God church—for the Malawi Congress Party’s electoral defeat. Malondera also accused the current DPP administration of wasteful spending, including an alleged costly repatriation of a Malawian refugee from South Africa, though details were not provided.
