Malawi unveils K8.1 trillion plan for 135,000 houses

The Malawi Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has launched a five-year strategic plan for 2026–2031, aiming to construct 135,000 modern housing units nationwide. The K8.1 trillion initiative is designed to address rapid urbanization, population growth, and increasing pressure on land resources.

Of the total budget, K7.64 trillion—approximately 93.9 percent—is allocated to housing delivery and management. The remaining funds will support land governance, digital land information services, surveying, physical planning, and urban development. The government aims to reduce a key housing-related indicator from 46 percent to 10 percent by the end of the implementation period.

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu noted that the government cannot address these challenges alone. Implementation will rely on a combination of government financing, internally generated resources, development partner support, and public-private partnerships. Eris Properties CEO Washington Chimuzu emphasized that collaboration between the government and private developers will be essential to bridge the country’s housing deficit.
