Malayalam classics Thenmavin Kombathu and Kaalapani to receive 4K re-releases

Classic Malayalam films ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’ and ‘Kaalapani’ are set for theatrical re-releases in restored 4K formats.

‘Thenmavin Kombathu’, the 1994 Priyadarshan-directed film starring Mohanlal and Shobana, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical re-release on October 8. The restoration process, conducted by Prasad Corporation and Matinee Now, involved scanning original 35mm negatives in 8K before digitally restoring them to Super 4K and adding a Dolby Atmos sound mix.

Additionally, the 1996 film ‘Kaalapani’ is also slated for a 4K rerelease. The film, which follows a man wrongfully imprisoned in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the British Raj, is undergoing restoration work by Matinee Now and Prasad Corporation. ‘Kaalapani’ previously earned four National Awards and seven Kerala State Film Awards.
