Malayalee communities celebrate Onam festival in Singapore and Ireland

Malayalee communities in Singapore and Ireland recently held celebrations for Onam, the traditional harvest festival of Kerala.

In Singapore, the Singapore Malayalee Association (SMA) hosted an Onam Village event featuring traditional performances such as Thiruvathira, Mohiniyattam, and Chenda Melam. The celebration included an Onasadya feast served to approximately 2,100 people. Minister of State Rahayu Mahzam attended the event, noting the community’s role in preserving heritage while fostering multiculturalism through the “kampung spirit.”

In Ireland, the Donegal Indian Malayalee Association (DIMA) marked its 16th annual Onam Festival, attracting around 500 attendees. The event featured music, dance, and food to promote cultural integration within the Donegal region. Local officials, including Minister Charlie McConalogue, attended the gathering, which highlighted the growing contribution of the Malayalee community to Ireland’s diverse social and professional landscape.
