Malaysia Airlines pilot detained for smuggling 25kg of ecstasy

A 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines pilot is under investigation after being detained in Indonesia for smuggling approximately 25 kilograms of ecstasy pills. The suspect was apprehended on July 29 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang after Indonesian customs officials detected suspicious luggage via X-ray scanning. The luggage contained 14 packages holding 70,114 ecstasy pills.

According to Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, Director of the Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, interrogations suggest the pilot acted alone and there is currently no evidence of involvement by airport insiders at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The suspect reportedly confessed that he has been smuggling drugs to various international destinations following his flight schedules since 2024.

The pilot has provided information regarding several drug syndicates operating in Malaysia and other countries, including Indonesia. The Royal Malaysia Police intend to conduct further investigations into these syndicates and trace the financial flows related to the drug sales. Information regarding the international networks will be shared with relevant enforcement agencies in the affected countries. The suspect remains in custody in Indonesia facing legal proceedings.
