Malaysia Airports and MAG partner for aviation sustainability
Malaysia Airports and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) have announced an expanded partnership to advance aviation sustainability and support Malaysia’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The collaboration will focus on adopting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), deploying renewable energy, ground electrification, and improving resource efficiency.
As part of these decarbonization efforts, MAG head Capt. Nasaruddin A. Bakar indicated that a green tax on passengers could be considered to offset the high costs of SAF. While the decision rests with the government, the potential tax would aim to address the prohibitive expense and limited availability of sustainable fuel.
To further reduce emissions, Malaysia Airlines is currently modernizing its fleet with orders for 40 Airbus A330neo and 55 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. These initiatives are intended to reinforce Kuala Lumpur’s status as a leading regional aviation hub while meeting international carbon reduction targets.
