Malaysia and Singapore seek to boost ASEAN trade connectivity

Malaysia and Singapore are seeking to enhance business connectivity and boost intra-ASEAN trade by leveraging their respective strengths in digital economies, supply chains, and key industries. During the third annual ministerial dialogue between Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), officials discussed strategies to increase the share of intra-ASEAN trade, which currently sits between $800 billion and $900 billion out of a total $4.37 trillion regional trade volume. A key strategic focus is the implementation of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA).

Separately, Malaysia is positioning itself as a strategic gateway for Indian companies looking to expand into the ASEAN market. Under the ASEAN-India framework, there are significant opportunities for cooperation in sustainable production, research, technology, and downstream manufacturing. While palm oil remains a cornerstone of the Malaysia-India trade relationship, officials are looking to expand partnerships into other commodities such as rubber and timber, as well as investments in processing and manufacturing.
