Malaysia announces reforms to strengthen governance and transparency
The Malaysian government has announced several key reforms through the 2027 Budget aimed at strengthening institutional governance and public financial management. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim introduced the proposal for a Government-Owned Entities Bill to tighten the management of assets and funds held by government companies and statutory bodies, seeking to prevent past financial scandals.
Additionally, a Government Procurement Act is set to take effect in 2027, which will mandate the public disclosure of project details, including contractor names and contract values. To support enforcement, RM1.1 billion has been allocated to enhance the operational capabilities of agencies such as the MACC, PDRM, and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said highlighted the establishment of the Malaysian Law Reform Commission as a step toward comprehensive legal reform. On social welfare, the government plans to raise the bankruptcy threshold from RM100,000 to RM150,000 starting in 2027 and will expand the Second Chance Policy to include caregivers for the elderly, the chronically ill, and gig workers.
