Malaysia begins repatriation of 1,476 Myanmar nationals
Malaysia has commenced a phased repatriation program for Myanmar nationals, beginning with the deportation of 1,476 individuals. The first group was transported to Malaysia’s Lumut Naval Base and loaded onto Myanmar navy vessels for transport to Myanmar.
The program, which aims to return a total of 5,000 people, has faced intense criticism from human rights organizations and forced-migration experts. Critics argue that the deportations are unsafe given the ongoing civil war and airstrikes in Myanmar, particularly in Rakhine State. The UNHCR has stated that current conditions in Myanmar do not allow for a safe or sustainable return of refugees.
While the Malaysian government maintains that the repatriations are voluntary, observers have raised concerns regarding the status of the Rohingya ethnic group, noting that Myanmar does not recognize them as citizens. Amidst the deportations, reports indicate continued violence in Myanmar, including airstrikes in Rakhine State that have resulted in significant civilian casualties.
