Malaysia consumer groups demand fuel quality checks after RON95 contamination reports
Consumer groups in Malaysia are calling for increased oversight and accountability following allegations that RON95 petrol at several stations in Kedah was contaminated with water. The Kedah Consumer Association (Cake) has urged petrol stations to compensate users for any losses or vehicle damage if laboratory tests confirm the presence of foreign substances in the fuel.
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has conducted inspections at 11 petrol stations across Alor Setar, Kubang Pasu, Sungai Petani, and Kulim. Fuel samples have been sent to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia for analysis to determine if the fuel meets safety standards.
In response to the situation in Kedah, the Sabah branch of the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) has urged KPDN to intensify quality monitoring and random sampling at petrol stations throughout Sabah, including rural and remote areas. YPNM emphasized the importance of preventative measures to protect consumers from high repair costs associated with damaged fuel systems, pumps, and engines.
