Malaysia continues to bear RM51.4 billion in 1MDB-related financial obligations

The Malaysian government continues to manage significant financial obligations stemming from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. According to the Ministry of Finance, the total obligations borne by the government amount to RM51.4 billion. As of May 31, 2026, RM42.5 billion has been paid, leaving a remaining debt and interest burden of approximately RM8.9 billion, including RM5 billion in principal and RM3.9 billion in Sukuk IMTN interest, which must be serviced until 2039.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that asset recovery efforts aim to restore institutional trust and Malaysia's international reputation. While RM31.3 billion has been recovered through asset retrieval efforts, the government still faces a net loss of approximately RM20 billion.

In related legal developments, four companies in liquidation have filed a claim in the Singapore High Court against DBS Bank Ltd. The claim seeks approximately US$1.298 billion (RM4.2 billion) in damages related to funds allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB and SRC International Sdn. Bhd. between 2013 and 2014 through five specific accounts.
