Malaysia Declares Putrajaya Monorail Project Unviable
The Malaysian Ministry of Transport announced that the Putrajaya monorail project, abandoned since 2004, is not viable to continue. The assessment, drawn from a public‑transport study covering Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Bangi and Kajang, cites the poor condition of existing rail infrastructure, including a long‑abandoned underground tunnel, and says detailed structural‑integrity tests are required.
The statement answered a question from Senator Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman about whether the ministry plans to resume the monorail to ease traffic congestion. Instead, the ministry highlighted the current Nadi Putra Bus service (seven routes, 26 buses, average 2,246 weekday passengers), a shuttle‑bus service (two routes, eight buses, 1,173 passengers) and the Rapid On‑Demand vans (three routes, nine vans, 315 passengers) as its strategy to improve public‑transport accessibility in Putrajaya.
