Malaysia Deputy PM warns of Northeast Monsoon flood risks
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged Malaysians to prioritize safety as the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) begins. The monsoon season is expected to last until March 2027, bringing the potential for extreme weather.
According to forecasts from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain are expected between November 2026 and January 2027. This weather pattern increases the risk of flooding, particularly for residents in low-lying areas and near rivers. Additionally, strong winds may cause rough seas and rising sea levels in the South China Sea.
Zahid advised citizens in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, follow official weather warnings, and evacuate to temporary relief centers (PPS) immediately if instructed by authorities. He also cautioned against attempting to wade through floodwaters and recommended preparing emergency kits containing essential documents, medicines, and basic necessities.
