Malaysia drug abuse rates exceed national average in four states

Malaysia recorded 130,307 drug addicts as of June, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The national drug abuse rate stands at 381 cases per 100,000 population.

Four states—Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis—reported rates significantly exceeding the national average. Terengganu recorded the highest rate at 735 per 100,000, followed by Kelantan (694), Kedah (669), and Perlis (646). At the district level, Langkawi reported the highest rate at 1,570 per 100,000.

Demographic data indicates that the majority of those involved are in the productive age group of 15 to 39. Most addicts hold a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification or lower. Regarding employment, the highest numbers are among the unemployed, followed by the self-employed and private sector workers. Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) or synthetic drugs account for 84 percent of drug use.
