Malaysia Education Minister addresses concerns over Student Protection Policy

Malaysia's Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, has called for calm following concerns raised by teachers and parents regarding the implementation of the School Student Protection Policy. The minister stated that the policy is intended to protect all parties involved in student affairs, including students, teachers, and the wider school community, by providing detailed guidelines on responsibilities during school incidents.

The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has expressed opposition to a requirement for teachers to sign a pledge of compliance with the policy via a professional circular. Critics argue this may undermine the existing efforts of teachers to provide high-quality service and protection to students. Some educators have also raised concerns on social media regarding the extent of their legal liability in incidents involving students with behavioral issues.

To address these concerns, the Ministry of Education has directed the Director-General of Education and the Ministry's Legal Advisor to hold a special session with stakeholders. This session aims to examine all grievances and provide a comprehensive explanation of the policy to ensure a safe school environment is created responsibly.
