Malaysia energy costs urged to be priority in Budget 2027

Experts are advising the Malaysian government to prioritize fuel and electricity costs in the 2027 Budget to ensure electricity tariffs remain affordable for citizens. Professor Madya Ir Dr Jasrul Jamani Jamian, Director of the Centre for Community and Industrial Networking (CCIN), noted that fuel costs are directly linked to electricity tariff settings, making cost control essential for consumer relief.

Addressing energy costs is also viewed as vital for maintaining a sustainable energy sector while balancing consumer needs with the costs of energy provision. Currently, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has implemented protections for over eight million domestic users by increasing the threshold to 800 kWh per month, exempting nearly one million additional users from certain adjustments and retail charges.
