Malaysia expands semiconductor ecosystem through Unisem investment and Khazanah funds

Unisem (M) Berhad has announced a 396 million Ringgit investment for the second expansion phase of its facility in Gopeng. The capital will be allocated as 196 million Ringgit for a new production building and 200 million Ringgit for equipment and preparatory works. This expansion aims to increase manufacturing capacity for advanced chip packaging, specifically targeting wafer-bumping and downstream processes for artificial intelligence, data centers, and high-performance computing.

In support of the broader national industry, Khazanah Nasional Bhd has welcomed Malaysia's Budget 2027 initiatives designed to strengthen the semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors. A US$36.7 million Strategic Investment Fund, involving Khazanah and the state governments of Penang and Selangor, will be established to support high-potential Malaysian firms. Additionally, RM2.1 billion from various funds, including Khazanah’s Mid-Tier Companies Fund, will support sectors such as electrical and electronics, digital technology, aerospace, and medical devices.
