Malaysia faces rapid transition to aged nation status by 2048
Malaysia is facing a rapid demographic shift, with Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir stating the country has approximately 27 years to prepare for “aged nation” status, projected for 2048. This transition is significantly faster than those experienced by developed nations, such as France (115 years), Australia (73 years), and the United States (69 years).
Malaysia officially entered the “aging nation” phase in 2021, when citizens aged 65 and older accounted for 7% of the population. Projections indicate this figure will reach 14% by 2048, and 20% by 2060, at which point the country will be classified as a “super-aged” society.
The minister highlighted several challenges posed by this shift, including slowing workforce growth, insufficient retirement savings, and increased demand for healthcare and elderly care services. A unique difficulty is that Malaysia’s current income levels are lower than those of developed nations during their respective demographic transitions. To address these issues, the National Aging Blueprint (NAB) 2025-2045 is undergoing final government review before a White Paper is tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
