Malaysia government to address Hajj minimum savings proposal
The Malaysian government is expected to address proposals to abolish the RM15,000 minimum savings requirement for prospective Hajj pilgrims during an upcoming winding-up session in the Dewan Rakyat.
PAS Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has urged the government to reconsider the rule set by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), arguing that the requirement places a heavy financial burden on Muslims, particularly low-income groups and rural residents. He noted that for a married couple, the requirement could reach RM30,000 in funds that must remain untouched, which may hinder financial preparation for the pilgrimage.
Tabung Haji has maintained that the RM15,000 minimum is intended to ensure the financial readiness of depositors. The requirement applies to those seeking to obtain or maintain Hajj eligibility without specific exemptions based on age or income. Existing depositors have been granted a transition period until December 31, 2028, to reach this minimum balance.
