Malaysia healthcare faces scrutiny over assets and staff welfare
Reports have emerged regarding poor working conditions and inadequate assets within Malaysia’s national health service. Following a tragedy involving the Flying Doctor Service, concerns were raised about the state of medical equipment and staff facilities. Social media posts highlighted dilapidated ambulances, including one in Tuaran, Sabah, that appeared to be a repurposed pick-up truck, and instances where healthcare workers had to manually hold ambulance doors shut during transit.
Separately, the Penang State Health Department and Bukit Mertajam Hospital addressed public outcry regarding meager meals provided to on-call doctors. While viral images suggested doctors were being served only bread and jam for breakfast, officials clarified that the photo depicted an afternoon tea serving rather than a main meal. The department stated that on-call medical officers are provided four meals daily, totaling an estimated 1,500 to 1,800 kcal, in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines.
