Malaysia implements community-based disaster and fire safety programs

Community-based disaster and safety programs are being implemented across Malaysia to enhance local preparedness and emergency response capabilities.

In Sabah, the Kampung Siaga 221 program aims to empower village communities with essential rescue skills, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of rescue equipment. Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs), stated that trained volunteers serve as a frontline defense to take initial action before official agencies like the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) or fire departments arrive at a disaster site.

In Sarawak, the Stakan Community Firefighter program focuses on increasing public awareness regarding fire safety and emergency procedures. State Assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim emphasized that basic fire safety knowledge is vital for daily life, noting that many fires originate from common kitchen or electrical equipment. He recommended that village committees and housing associations provide fire extinguishers in residential areas to mitigate risks before professional firefighters arrive.
