Malaysia begins repatriation of 1,500 Myanmar nationals

Malaysia has commenced the first phase of a repatriation program, sending approximately 1,500 Myanmar nationals back to their home country. This initial group is part of a broader agreement between Kuala Lumpur and Naypyitaw to return up to 5,000 individuals. The Malaysian government maintains that the process is strictly voluntary, with detainees reportedly agreeing to return from detention centers.

The operation has drawn significant criticism from human rights organizations and the United Nations. The UNHCR and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have expressed concerns regarding the safety of the returnees, noting that current conditions in Myanmar do not meet the requirements for “voluntary, safe, dignified and lasting return” due to ongoing civil conflict and aggressive conscription laws.

While the exact number of Rohingya individuals among the first group has not been disclosed, the UN estimates that the Rohingya minority makes up two-thirds of the approximately 190,000 Myanmar refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia. The deportations have also increased anxiety within local refugee communities, who face heightened fears of immigration raids and legal instability.
