Malaysia invests RM1 billion to digitalize public healthcare

Malaysia is undergoing a digital transformation within its public healthcare system to improve service delivery and patient experiences. The government has recently allocated up to RM1 billion to the Ministry of Health to accelerate digitalization efforts, including the implementation of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems and Cloud-Based Management Systems (CCMS).

Healthcare workers report that these digital tools have streamlined registration and screening processes, reducing patient waiting times and allowing staff to focus more on clinical needs. Beyond digitizing paper records, the transformation includes the integration of telemedicine, which allows for remote patient monitoring, and the potential use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist doctors with rapid medical analysis and decision-making.

While the Ministry of Health has established a roadmap for 2026 to 2030 for phased EMR implementation, experts note that challenges remain. These include system integration, platform differences, and ensuring data privacy and security.
