Malaysia launches free AI subscriptions for 100,000 youths

The Malaysian government announced that 100,000 young Malaysians aged 18 to 30 will receive three‑month free subscriptions to premium AI software, beginning on 31 August 2026, the country’s Merdeka Day. Participants must complete short online modules on the government’s Rakyat Digital platform, which cover generative AI, agentic AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity and AI safety. The initiative was unveiled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with the digital ministry overseen by Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

No specific AI provider was named, but the program is estimated to cost between RM7 million and RM30 million, roughly RM60 per future digital job under the Malaysia Digital 2030 plan. The policy aims to boost digital literacy, empower youths to develop AI‑driven tools, and create high‑value digital employment opportunities.

Anwar said that those who finish the training “will then be able to subscribe freely (for three months) to popular AI apps,” positioning the scheme as seed capital for a nascent AI‑enabled industry in Malaysia.
