Malaysia approves BSE elevated expressway and KLK highway upgrade

The Malaysian Cabinet has granted in-principle approval for the development of the Bandar Malaysia–Seri Kembangan (BSE) elevated expressway. Designed as a strategic infrastructure project to enhance connectivity within Greater Kuala Lumpur, the BSE will serve as a high-capacity link integrating several major highways, including the KL-Seremban, MEX, Besraya, NPE, KESAS, and SPRINT networks. Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi stated the project aims to provide alternative routes, reduce travel times, and improve access to employment and educational hubs. The project is intended to be privately financed, requiring no direct financial commitment from the federal government.

In a separate infrastructure development, Malaysia has launched a US$500 million upgrade of the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway (KLK). This project includes the construction of a 999-meter long third Genting Sempah tunnel to increase capacity through the mountainous Titiwangsa range. The upgrade will widen 45.3km of the expressway to accommodate growing traffic volumes, which have risen from approximately 41,000 vehicles per day in 1997 to over 135,000 per day currently. The KLK widening and tunnel works are scheduled for completion by 2030.
