Malaysia launches MPMS-1 patrol vessel built by Turkey's DESAN
Malaysia has launched the MPMS-1, a 99-meter multi-purpose patrol vessel designed to strengthen maritime security and sovereignty over 600,000 square kilometers of territory. Developed by Turkey’s DESAN Tersanesi for the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the 3,300-ton vessel was launched at the ATLAS facilities in Kocaeli.
The MPMS-1 is engineered for high endurance, capable of 30-day continuous patrols. Its technical capabilities include the integration of two HAVELSAN BozBey drones, a helipad for helicopters up to 11 tons, and four high-speed interceptor boats. For defense, it features an ASELSAN SMASH 200/30 remotely controlled 30mm gun and two 12.7mm weapons. The vessel also utilizes Thales SMART-L radar for long-range situational awareness.
According to MMEA Director-General Admiral Mohd Rosli Abdullah, the ship will play a critical role in patrolling the South China Sea against illegal fishing, smuggling, and human trafficking. The initial contract for the first vessel is valued at US$ 68.8 million, with a second vessel, the MPMS-2, under a separate US$ 83.75 million agreement. Delivery is expected between January and March 2027.
