Malaysia mandates haze guidelines for sporting events
Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, has stated that all sporting events organized during haze conditions must strictly adhere to government guidelines to protect athlete health and safety.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is continuously monitoring the Air Pollutant Index (API) using data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and other relevant agencies. Athletes training outdoors must follow established protocols to prevent adverse health effects, particularly when API readings reach unhealthy levels.
KBS is coordinating with the National Sports Institute (ISN) and the National Sports Council (MSN) to ensure athlete well-being ahead of the upcoming Asian Games. While outdoor activities are prohibited in red zone areas, sports may continue in regions where API levels remain in the safe or moderate range. Any sporting event must obtain KBS approval based on local air quality conditions.
