Malaysia Ministry of Agriculture targets El Nino impact in Budget 2027

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is prioritizing the impact of the El Nino phenomenon in its Budget 2027 application to address unforeseen food supply needs. Agriculture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu discussed these requirements with Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan to ensure readiness for the phenomenon, which is expected to intensify next year.

Key areas of focus include the fisheries and livestock sectors. Rising sea temperatures due to El Nino may affect fish catches, while the livestock sector remains a priority as Malaysia currently produces only about 20 percent of its domestic meat requirements. Additionally, there is a focus on increasing local grain corn production to support ruminant animal feed.

To support these efforts, Agrobank will play an expanded role in providing financing facilities to players in the agromakanan, fisheries, and livestock sectors. The ministry aims to bolster food security against both climate-driven disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties.
