Malaysia Ministry of Health prepares for rising public hospital demand

Malaysia's Ministry of Health (KKM) is preparing for a potential surge in public hospital patients following rising health insurance costs. Director-General of Health, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathar Abd. Wahab, stated that the ministry is working with the Ministry of Finance through a joint inter-ministerial committee to address the issue comprehensively.

Reports indicate that health insurance premiums have been increasing by as much as 20 percent annually, a rate that Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, President of the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, noted is more significant than the year-on-year increase in private healthcare charges.

Dr. Mahathar emphasized that the ministry is actively planning for future service needs and facility requirements based on projections to ensure the government can provide necessary financial support and manage increased demand in the public sector.
