Malaysia Ministry of Health to accelerate permanent roles for contract pharmacists

The Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) has committed to accelerating the process of absorbing contract pharmacists into permanent positions. As of July 2026, 3,545 contract pharmacists remain in service, with 115 individuals currently on a reserve list awaiting permanent appointments. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that the ministry is working closely with the government and the Ministry of Finance to expedite these transitions.

This move follows calls from the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) for clarity regarding the career paths of pharmacists. Following government announcements regarding the permanent appointment of thousands of contract doctors, pharmacy professionals have sought similar transparency to ensure long-term stability within the public health service.

Additionally, the Ministry is addressing the migration of nurses abroad by focusing on faster recruitment of new staff and improving retention through better welfare, competitive salaries via the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), and enhanced career prospects.
