Malaysia opens new pickleball hub while India lags on sport's infrastructure

Malaysia inaugurated the Skycourts Kuala Lumpur complex, featuring two pickleball and two padel courts, a café and changing facilities on the rooftop of the Perdana Kuala Lumpur City Centre hotel. Former national tennis coach Hazli Zainuddin said the venue will help harness the speed and agility of Asian players, building on the country’s success in badminton and squash and creating pathways for future racquet‑sport stars.

In contrast, India’s pickleball ecosystem remains under‑developed. The nation has an estimated 1,200‑2,500 courts, concentrated in major metros, and about 100,000 active players, far fewer than the United States. Limited grassroots programs, a shortage of certified coaches, and modest sponsorship and media deals hinder growth, keeping the sport largely an urban pastime rather than a mainstream discipline.
