Malaysia OPR projected to rise to 3.00 percent

The Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) in Malaysia is projected to potentially increase by 25 basis points to 3.00 percent in the coming years, depending on inflation trends and economic growth.

Experts suggest that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will base its decisions on real economic data and inflation prospects. One projection indicates that core inflation could rise to 2.5 percent by the third quarter of 2027, compared to the current 1.7 percent. A potential hike would likely be driven by widespread price pressures, wage growth, and increased household spending.

A rise in the OPR would increase financing costs for floating-rate loans, leading to higher installment payments and reduced disposable income for households. For businesses, particularly small enterprises with low profit margins, higher financing costs could limit operational spending and investment, potentially slowing economic growth momentum. However, a 25 basis point adjustment may be absorbed if the national economy remains resilient with strong income and sales growth.
