Malaysia PM announces US$50 billion AI and data center investment plan

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a global investor plans to invest approximately US$50 billion in the country’s artificial intelligence, new technology, and data center sectors. The proposed investment is expected to span Kuching in Sarawak as well as Peninsular Malaysia.

During a video conference held last Tuesday, the investor reportedly conveyed its intention to expand into these emerging technology sectors, which could create significant employment opportunities for the Malaysian workforce. While the Prime Minister identified the scale of the investment, the specific identity of the investor has not been officially confirmed by the company involved.

This potential move follows significant existing tech investments in Malaysia, including commitments from Oracle, Amazon Web Services, NVIDIA, and Microsoft. However, industry experts note that while the announcement presents a major growth perspective, the investment remains unconfirmed by the corporate entity itself.
