Malaysia PM Anwar orders investigation into Beaufort police deaths

Three police officers of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) died on 7 August 2026 in Beaufort, Sabah, after a 29‑foot iron pole they were using to pull a coconut contacted a high‑voltage power line, delivering a fatal electric shock. The victims were Corporal Chiu Teck Siong, 40, from Sarawak; Corporal Mohamad Nur Hafiz Ibrahim, 29, from Kelantan; and Corporal Muhammad Raimi Ismarubee, 26, from Terengganu. Their bodies were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for forensic autopsy before being returned to their families.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed condolences, ordered a thorough and transparent investigation, and called for improvements to prevent similar incidents. Beaufort District Police Superintendent Champin Piuh explained that the wet peat soil and standing water may have contributed to the accident and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
