Malaysia political stability debated amid BN-PN cooperation talks

Political leaders and analysts in Malaysia are debating the effectiveness of cooperation between the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalitions. Hamzah Zainudin, president of Wawasan and opposition leader, argues that a pact between the two groups would be more stable if it were established with a common plan and shared goals from the beginning. He suggests that previous collaborations lacked the necessary advance planning to build mutual trust and emphasizes the need for a systematic approach to economic and education policies.

In contrast, analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri has dismissed the notion that Malay unity serves as a guarantee for political stability, labeling the idea a ‘myth’. Citing historical precedents—including the expulsion of PAS from BN in 1977 and various internal Umno crises—he argues that Malay political parties have frequently cooperated only to later split or clash. He suggests that shared identity alone is insufficient to sustain long-term political cooperation.
