Malaysia prepares cloud seeding in Kedah due to Super El Nino
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is prepared to conduct cloud seeding operations in Kedah if water levels in major dams reach critical stages due to the Super El Nino phenomenon. While water levels in the Pedu Dam are currently reported as stable, officials are maintaining continuous monitoring to ensure sufficient water supply for the agricultural sector.
Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that cloud seeding could be implemented if suitable cloud formations exist and dry weather persists. The KPKM will collaborate with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) to assess the necessity of such operations. In the event of a water emergency, priority will be given to domestic use, which may result in the temporary suspension of irrigation for paddy fields.
Beyond agriculture, the extreme weather is expected to impact coastal fishing activities as rising temperatures may cause fish to move further from the shore. The Minister advised the public not to panic or engage in excessive food hoarding, noting that national food supplies remain stable and sufficient.
