Malaysia prepares for extreme heat and drought from Super El Nino

Malaysia is bracing for the potential impact of a ‘Super El Nino’ phenomenon, which is projected to cause extreme heat and prolonged drought conditions from January to May 2027. Meteorological experts indicate a high probability of this event, with some models suggesting the intensity could surpass all recorded El Nino episodes since 1950. Temperatures in certain regions, particularly in northern Peninsular Malaysia and inland areas of Sabah and Sarawak, could reach up to 40°C.

In response, the Perak state government has activated its disaster management protocols. Authorities are closely monitoring water levels in major reservoirs, such as the Bukit Merah and Sultan Azlan Shah dams, to mitigate potential water shortages. The Perak Water Board (LAP) has implemented mitigation plans including the optimization of water treatment plants, water supply re-zoning, and the mobilization of water tankers. Additionally, the state is seeking funding to manage impacts on affected areas and is coordinating with national agencies to proactively manage water crisis risks.
