Malaysia R&D portal records RM2 billion in patent matches

Malaysia's R&D commercialization portal has recorded over 500 patent matches valued at more than RM2 billion, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir. Speaking at the University Research and Innovation Investment Summit (URIIS) 2026 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Zambry noted that there are currently more than 120 active missions underway.

The Minister emphasized the need to accelerate the transition of research from laboratories to the market and industry to ensure tangible societal impact. He urged researchers to move beyond mere publication and patenting by understanding market needs and engaging with industrial partners.

Additionally, Zambry called on industry players to increase their confidence in local research outputs and to view universities as strategic partners for solving technical challenges. He encouraged investors to recognize researchers not just as academics, but as innovators and potential business partners capable of scaling technology globally.
