Malaysia reviews gig worker protections for Budget 2027

The Malaysian Ministry of Finance is reviewing social protection, insurance costs, and service fee rates for e-hailing and p-hailing gig workers as part of the preparations for Budget 2027. During recent engagement sessions with worker representatives, officials discussed issues including vehicle maintenance burdens and the challenges faced by drivers and delivery riders.

In a related development regarding social security, platform providers have contributed over RM1.5 million to expand coverage under the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) scheme. Contributions include RM1 million from Foodpanda, RM500,000 from Grab, and RM14,412.40 from Halo. This funding is set to benefit approximately 500 gig workers, providing a critical safety net for riders and drivers and their families.
