Malaysia reviews Myanmar refugee repatriation and safety risks

Malaysia is reviewing its plans regarding the repatriation of Myanmar refugees, stating that any return of approximately 5,000 Rohingya individuals will be halted if safety risks or persecution are identified. The government is conducting a detailed assessment of humanitarian conditions and security through the Foreign and Home Ministries to fulfill international protection obligations.

Interior Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasized that refugee management must account for the 19 different ethnic groups from Myanmar currently in the country, including the Chin and Arakanese, rather than focusing solely on the Rohingya. He noted that the implementation of the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) is intended to facilitate identification, screening, and security checks.

The ultimate goal for these refugees remains determining appropriate solutions, which may include repatriation to their country of origin, resettlement in a third country via the UNHCR, or deportation following established legal processes.
