Malaysia secures diplomatic agreement with Myanmar for refugee repatriation

Malaysia has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone by becoming the first country to convince Myanmar to accept the repatriation of its refugees. Following an official visit by Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Malaysia on October 7 and 8, both nations have moved toward facilitating the return of Myanmar citizens.

According to Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, 10,400 Myanmar refugees were successfully repatriated between the start of the year and the end of September. Notably, Myanmar has agreed to bear the full costs associated with these repatriations.

An additional 3,000 refugees of various ethnicities are expected to be sent back in the near future. To expedite this process, Myanmar has committed to sending a naval vessel to Malaysia. Previous repatriation phases included the return of 1,476 detainees using three ships, including a Myanmar Navy hospital ship.
