Malaysia seeks to expand Russian tourism market and air links
Malaysia is moving to expand its tourism market in Russia by strengthening promotional efforts, increasing travel agency cooperation, and exploring enhanced air connectivity. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing stated that Russia remains a vital market, noting that 98,466 Russian tourists arrived in Malaysia during the first eight months of 2026, a 4.3 percent increase compared to the previous year and 49 percent above 2019 levels.
During a sales mission in St. Petersburg, Tiong met with Mikhail Maltsev, President of the Ural Tourism Association, to discuss industry cooperation. The Ural region is considered a high-potential market, as approximately 15 percent of Russian outbound tourists originate from there. Tiong emphasized that bringing tourism professionals to Malaysia to experience local destinations firsthand is more effective than advertising alone.
To facilitate growth, the Malaysian government is seeking to improve air links, including potential direct flights. Tiong scheduled meetings with Russian airlines Aeroflot and Red Wings to discuss these possibilities, as well as discussions with major travel companies such as Space Travel and Russian Express. While Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi are well-known, officials aim to increase awareness of other destinations like Penang, Melaka, and Johor to encourage longer stays.
