Malaysia seizes $12.1 million in advanced AI chips at KLIA

Malaysian customs authorities have seized 30 server units containing advanced artificial intelligence chips at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) free trade zone. The shipment, valued at approximately 49.5 million ringgit (about $12.1 million), was intercepted during an inspection on October 15.

According to KLIA Customs Director Aspalila Ag Tuah, the servers were falsely declared as general electronic components to evade detection. Investigators believe a smuggling syndicate is using Malaysia as a transit hub to re-export high-performance semiconductors to another Asian country, bypassing required trade permits.

This incident marks the fifth such seizure involving this suspected syndicate this year. Previous interceptions, including one in June involving 72 servers, have brought the total value of seized chips to over 100 million ringgit (approximately $24 million). A Malaysian company that facilitated the shipment has been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.
