Malaysia sought as co-chair of The Hague Group

Malaysia has been requested by several nations to serve as a co-chair of The Hague Group alongside South Africa. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan announced the proposal following the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mohamad stated that the interest in Malaysia's leadership stems from the country's firm and outspoken stance on international law and international humanitarian law. The Hague Group, established in January 2025, serves as a platform for member nations to coordinate legal and diplomatic actions, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue.

While Malaysia is a founding member and current co-sponsor of the group, the transition to a co-chair role remains subject to approval from the Malaysian Cabinet and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Currently, the group is co-chaired by Colombia and South Africa.
