Asian stock markets show mixed performance amid regional volatility
Asian stock markets showed mixed performance on Wednesday. In Singapore, the Straits Times Index (STI) fell 1.6 percent to 5,608.44, driven by significant declines in major banks including OCBC, which dropped 5.9 percent, and UOB, which fell 2.9 percent. Analysts noted that upcoming third-quarter results for these banks might be lower than expected due to misplaced optimism regarding interest rates.
In Taiwan, the TAIEX experienced volatility near the 50,000-point mark, closing down 16.18 points at 49,806.37. The New Taiwan Dollar also saw a slight depreciation following increased selling by foreign investors.
Conversely, markets in Indonesia and Thailand reported upward trends. The Jakarta Composite Index has risen for three consecutive sessions, climbing nearly 2.8 percent to sit above 6,190 points, supported by gains in the technology, energy, and financial sectors. Similarly, the Stock Exchange of Thailand has seen four straight sessions of growth, rising over 1.4 percent to sit above the 1,575-point plateau.
