Malaysia strengthens national security readiness amid global geopolitical tensions
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced a comprehensive strategy to bolster Malaysia’s national security readiness in response to increasing global geopolitical uncertainties. The government is focusing on four key pillars: enhancing coordination between ministries and agencies, increasing preparedness for domestic and foreign threats, protecting critical infrastructure and strategic sectors—such as energy, transport, finance, and food supplies—and improving public awareness and readiness.
A recent National Security Council meeting addressed the implications of hybrid, digital, and cyber attacks. The Prime Minister highlighted the risk of cyberattacks capable of paralyzing essential administrative systems, citing recent incidents in Belgium, Denmark, and the United States as cautionary examples. The council also examined the potential impact of regional conflicts, including tensions in West Asia and the possibility of nuclear escalation involving Iran, on Malaysia’s stability.
To combat smuggling, particularly drugs, the government is upgrading technology at national entry points. While advanced detection technology and AI-driven CCTV are currently deployed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the Prime Minister noted that smugglers are increasingly using alternative airports like Penang and Kota Bharu. Consequently, the government aims to expand these technological capabilities and enhance inter-agency coordination to secure borders more effectively.
